Peter J. Drumm (1898-1952) was a native of Derrygooney, County Monaghan. He was one of four children, all sons, born to John Drumm and Bridget Drumm née Connolly. His older brother was Dr James J. Drumm, whose best-known scientific achievements centre on the electric storage battery that bears his name. Peter had strong family connections on his mother’s side to Aughnamullen, County Monaghan and to Kinawley, County Fermanagh on his father’s side.

Peter was the first Professor of Biochemistry at University College Cork. He was a man of extraordinary ability and an outstanding chemist and biochemist. His academic and research output in Ireland, England, Germany and Scotland was considerable. All of this was achieved against a backdrop of political and economic upheaval and war, both in Ireland and abroad. His death at a relatively young age was a tremendous loss to his academic colleagues and students at UCC.

The author, Dr. Ned Barrett, is a graduate of University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin. He worked for many years as a clinical biochemist in the Irish healthcare service and is now retired.
