Animals can talk to each other and understand human language but people cannot hear them.  Nibbler, the grey rabbit at the centre of these stories learns this from Big Tom a big striped cat who knows everything.  Allowed the freedom of her garden by Grania when she realises that he is unhappy sitting in a hutch all day, Nibbler befriends Big Tom, plays with Lucy a young kitten and has a close encounter with tadpoles.  He has a vicious fight with Buck a nasty big white rabbit, is chased by two scary cocker spaniels and spends a night in Peadar and Teresa Reed’s kitchen, before he eventually moves to County Wicklow and his family.
