A Short Stretch of the Legs – My Penny Mile Camino

‘Loss’ is a small word, but with a very big meaning. To lose a person you love is to lose a part of yourself. My Father died 24th June 2011 leaving me to amble helplessly through
an unchartered grieving process. Lost, without direction, I lived the next few months in a glaze of tears and darkness, but I knew that was not what he would have wanted. Never one to go under, I knew what he would suggest… A walk!

Drying my tears, I dug out my Asics and prepared to walk the Camino De Santiago. The 500 mile Way of St. James. This would be my tribute to the man who taught me how to take my first step. Each footstep would be walked in his memory and the memory of all those who have lost their lives to cancer.

This is my daily diary of the fun and laughter, the tears and pain. 24 days walking in northern Spain towards the end of the saddest year of my life. Arriving at the Santiago cobbles on the first anniversary of the day my Dad left us, to take his final “short stretch of the legs”. I invite you to lace up your boots and walk The Way with me through every page and mile from the beautiful Cavehill in North Belfast to the stunning shores of Muxia in North Spain and everything in between. Climb the mountains I climbed. Meet the wonderful people I met. Sleep in the Albergues I slept. But most of all, enjoy this great Adventure. Buen Camino.

Inspiration

Having survived cancer herself, she decided that each footstep walked would be in memory of her father Jim and all those who have lost their lives to cancer. Along her journey she would leave a penny in memory of those who died, with her final penny kept for placing at the crypt of St James in Santiago Cathedral in memory of her dad.

A Short Stretch of the Legs is her daily diary of the fun and laughter, the tears and pain of 24 days walking in northern Spain towards the end of the saddest year of her life.

Arriving at the Santiago cobbles on the first anniversary of the day her Dad left the family, to take his final “short stretch of the legs” Carol Ann penned her thoughts on a daily basis and the end result is a remarkable story of one person’s thoughts and courage and dedication to her beloved father as she made her way from the beautiful Cavehill in North Belfast to the stunning shores of Muxia in North Spain.
